Is 4-5 pounds too much gain in the first trimester if I'm only supposed to gain 15-20 pounds total (per doctor) thru entire pregnancy?

I didn't gain any weight until my half way through my second trimester. My doctor was pleased. After that, it happened really fast and my doctor was not very pleased. Everyone is different.

If that is your total recommended weight gain, I would ask your doctor. Typically I would say that's right on since it is about 5 lbs on average, but that is for someone who should gain a total of 25-35 lbs.

As long as you are not eating things that are unhelathy and as long as you are not eating till you are bloated, go ahead and gain weight. :)
We are all different. I lost 20pounds in my first and second trimester becasue of mornign sickness... and in my 3rd I am only 5pounds down, and will gain most of my weight in my 8th and 9th month.
Good Luck and Congrats.

i am in my 19th week and i am still below my pregnancy weight. now by just about 3 lbs. and i am carrying a big baby. doc said she should be about 8oz but she is 10z (as of last week)

if i need to gain 20lbs I'm in trouble LOL

unless your doc says otherwise you are fine

Hmm I wonder if you've been craving the wrong foods? Try and eat like your non pregnant self, in the first trimester we don't need any extra calories, then about 300 extra a day later on in pregnancy. Which is like, let me see here.... *looks at box* only 4 girl scout cookies! Crap LOL

This would be a hard question to say yes or no... you see everyone is different no baby develops the same your body is different especially if your under weight you will gain more during pregnancy.. I was told 5lbs in first Trimester (your body getting ready for baby) then 1/2lbs a week the rest of the time but your body is going to do its own thing

I think it depends on the person to tell you the truth and what your body wants to do. I would have been thrilled if I had a 4lb weight gain in the first trimester and only gained 20lbs the entire time. I was very thin when I got pregnant and gained 20lbs the first trimester and was horrified... 60 for the whole pregnancy. It didn't matter what I ate. I ate extremely healthy and still it just piled on. Hormones have alot to do with weight gain as well and you can't control that. Luckily, within three weeks I was back in my old clothes and got even thinner than I was before I got pregnant.
Same with all my pregnancies.... gained the same amount and lost it all immediately and then some. So.... don't stress over weight gain to much. I did and there was nothing I could do about it and everything was fine in the end. I used to have nightmares that I'd never get back to what I was cause of all the weight I gained and I didn't even have to try at all. Then, there are some people who don't have a huge weight gain and can never get rid of those last 5-10lbs . Just depends on the person.

I am not sure.

For my case, I was losing weight until about week 18. From week 18 onwards, every month on average I put on 1.5kg. My doctor seemed pleased with it.

I gained about 10 lbs in the first trimester - I was supposed to keep my weight gain under 25 pounds. The doctor wasn't too worried at that point, but by the end of my 2nd trimester I was at 20 pounds, so he asked me to exercise. Since then I've been able to keep my weight gain at 20 pounds (I'm now 30 weeks) - plus, I have way more energy now than I have throughout my entire pregnancy!
Here's an article with some info on the benefits of exercise on pregnancy:

My doc told me to only gain 15-20 too (which is hillarious if you ask me) and I am 9 weeks and have gained 2 lbs so far. My girlfriend is in a similar situation and is 12 weeks and has gained 4. So I think it is pretty normal to gain 4 by the end of your 1st trimester. I found this website pretty helpful. It takes your pre-weight into account and calculates how much weight you should gain per week during pregnancy for your specific BMI.
