Mood Swings in Pregnancy
Introduction
Mood swings are normal during pregnancy because of hormonal changes. They can be extremes of feelings which might be happy or depressing varying from person to person. Moods elevate during the 6th to 10th weeks and then reduce in the 2nd trimester and then again reappear as the pregnancy comes to an end. There are times when you might be excited about the arrival of your baby and other times worried about the delivery or the finances or more. Causes of mood swings in pregnancy
Mood swings are caused by various factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, fatigue and changes in your metabolic system. The mood swings can vary from person to person and are a result of major changes in your hormonal levels which can affect your level of neurotransmitters which are chemicals found in your brain that regulate your mood.
Coping with mood swings
You must primarily realize that it is normal to experience mood swings during pregnancy and include different methods to manage your levels of stress. This can be done by taking plenty of sleep, eating the right amount of balanced food, taking naps and breaks during the day, going for walks or indulging in any creative and relaxing activity that you like, joining yoga or prenatal classes for pregnant women so that you can meet other pregnant women who face similar problems and discussing similar interests them will make you feel better, get a massage to relax and finally but most importantly do not be hard on yourself and try to seek the help of others while managing the household chores or at work.
Seeking Professional help
You know it is right to seek professional help when your mood swings last for more than two weeks and do not get any better. More than 10 million American women are affected by depression every year and the symptoms could be sleep disturbances, insomnia, and memory loss for a short while, forgetfulness, changes in eating habits and inability to concentrate on anything. Such severe mood swings and depression needs treatment from professional counselors.
Understanding mood swings
Your partner plays an important role in supporting and understanding your mood swings during pregnancy. This can be done by making her happy and not demanding too much from her during this period. Be sensitive and positive in helping her adjust to the early discomforts experienced by her. Encourage communication and discuss your feelings openly with her allowing her to express her anxieties and worries. Avoid panicking along with her and let her know that you are there for her as this can reduce much of her stress.
