Sugar intake and Oral health

An introduction:

Maintaining a good health during pregnancy period is the best way of ensuring a good health of the unborn baby. During the pregnancy period the requirement of the expectant mother increases drastically. The need of essential vitamins and minerals increases which can be only done by keeping a regular check on the sugar intake and having a well balanced and healthy diet comes a far way in ensuring a good health.

Keeping a check on the sugar level:

One of the most important things to do is to keep a regular check on the sugar level in the body. During pregnancy sugar is absorbed in the blood which in turn requires a release of insulin to maintain a normal blood sugar level. The pancreas has to work very hard to maintain a high level of sugar in the body which is very essential to match the increased supply of the blood in the body. Thus, it is most common to experience a rise in the sugar levels during the pregnancy period. With the increased blood level the expectant mother mostly develops a condition which is called as gestational diabetes which indicates the high level of the sugar in the body. Thus, in order to maintain a normal sugar level in the body the expectant mother should avoid an intake of foods that are high in sugar contents. More concentration should be on taking complex carbohydrates. The carbohydrates require a longer time to get absorbed into the blood and thus provide the body with energy for a very longer time. Foods high in the concentration of dietary fiber like vegetables, cereals, beans should be taken regularly which help in the reduction of the amount of insulin that is required by the body.

Oral health care during pregnancy:

There are many changes that the expectant mother may experience during the pregnancy period. The changes may be hormonal i.e. within the body or external i.e. outside the body. During the pregnancy period the hormonal changes can have a bed affect upon the gums that are not well maintained. Thus, it is advisable to keep a good oral hygiene which will include the flossing, brushing and using all sorts of aids that are recommended by the doctor. In the absence of the above means the bacteria may get transferred from the mothers mouth to the baby’s which would consequently lead to the child getting infected with the bacteria. The bacteria can get transferred while kissing the baby on the lips or while tasting the food with their spoon. To improve the oral health the expectant should visit the dentist regularly and maintain a high oral hygiene before and after the pregnancy.
