Taboos related to pregnancy

We are living in the 21st century, yet we still have to deal many myths and taboos related to all things in life. Even when it comes to something as divine as pregnancy we can see many people saying this is wrong or this is correct without having any proper knowledge regarding the topic. Certain common myths and taboos have been given below which have been associated with pregnancy and pregnant women.

Caffeine, fish, cats, x ray and soft cheese have all become victims of such myths and other types of comments.

Caffeine: Caffeine which is main constituent of coffee has for long been a taboo and we can still here people saying that coffee is bad for both the mother and the child during pregnancy. Doctors have successfully proven that the consumption of coffee does not have an ill effect as long as it is controlled. An intake below 300 milligrams is considered fine which is the same amount as two cups of star bucks coffee.

Soft cheese: Soft cheese is another common myth with pregnant women. The taboo says that forms of soft cheese such as goat cheese and brie produces a microbe called Listeria. The actual problem related to pregnancy can only take place if the cheese is not pasteurized. As long as the cheese we eat it pasteurized according to FDA norms the consumption should be fine.

Cats: Cats too have become a victim of these taboos. They say that exposure to cats can cause toxoplasmosis which is a parasite infection which will can cause cerebral pasy, deafness and blindness to the infant. However research has proven that the pregnant lady does not have to remove the cat from the house entirely. What is important is that that pregnant person neither does nor come in contact with the feces of the cat. They should also take care that the hands are properly washed after petting them. Another important thing to note is that toxoplasmosis is treatable and so if the lady feels insecure she can contact and clarify.

X rays: Medical radiation caused while taking X rays have also been a cause for concern. This radiation is rumored to affect the fetus, this however has been overblown. The doctor says that this radiation is too small to create any damage to the infant.

Exercise: Another common taboo is the one related to exercise. Doctors used to say that working and working out during pregnancy is dangerous and that it should not be practiced. Doctors have proven otherwise, and now they advise all pregnant persons with adequate type and amounts of exercise. This exercise can help both the infant and the mother during this period.
